Summary of Lesson Plan:
This lesson provides students with the opportunity to develop an understanding of the relationship between solids and liquids through a real world learning context. This lesson was designed for a year 3 class, it has been tested and worked well with high student engagement.
Australian Curriculum Links:
Year 3 Science Understanding:
- A change of state between solid and liquid can be caused by adding or removing heat (ACSSU046)
- AC Elaborations:
- investigating how liquids and solids respond to changes in temperature, for example water changing to ice, or melting chocolate.
- exploring how changes from solid to liquid and liquid to solid can help us recycle materials.
- predicting the effect of heat on different materials.
Lesson Plan Sequence:
*** Please note that this lesson sequence is supported through the use of a Powerpoint presentation ***
- Show the students the solid and liquids power point provided.
- Complete the experiment with instructions on the Powerpoint.
- Ask the students to write a small summary of the experiment.
- Have students complete the solids and liquids worksheet (repeat the Powerpoint if required)
- Have students exchange papers with the person next to them and mark the questions (you are provided with an answer sheet).
- Discuss with the student the learning that has taken place around transforming a solid to a liquid and back to a solid. What changed the state of the matter?
Assessment Ideas:
- Anecdotal notes on students
- Collect worksheets to check understanding.
- Students record their findings using a digital device and share with class.
